Improvement Plan
Technology
today allows us to instantly find answers online, access to media, capture a
moment, communicate with someone and expect results instantly. I chose to
discuss improvement on instant gratification, newsgathering and texting over talking.
We want it now, now, now and we won't settle for anything less. This instant
gratification stunts children's ability to build, to allow to be critical
consumers of media (Weinberger, 2014). This has become a cultural limitation
because, children today they don't understand learning comes at the end of doing,
says Weinberger. A recommendation from Weinberger is that in children we focus
on effort not on outcome. I think this will work with us as adults as well.
The
instant answers and access isn't necessary for us, put it’s become a part of us
and it is because it is convenient, but defiantly not a need to have everything
be done faster and immediately. The technology is here to stay for while at
least, but we can lessen the pull it has on us for now. We can work on delaying
the need to know, because it will help to strengthen your mind, and shape up
your character, it builds your will power and promotes a higher level of
self-discipline (Sicinksi, n.d).
Newsgathering
has changed due to crowdsourcing as mentioned in a previous post, I think an
improvement on finding out the whole story as the news breaks on social media
comes from us as users and social media design. Social media platforms could
cluster the tweets or posts based off the location, or key words when something
is occurring that becomes news.
Improvements
can be made to increase our conversations again, instead of texting all the
time, and being disconnected when there is a person sitting right across from
you. It sounds silly, I know, but leaving the phone in a pocket, a bag, or
upside down on the table. Call people more, even for short questions or plan
making. Disconnecting once week from all digital devices, and doing something
else is scary for some people, and for others easy. An improvement would be for
us to disconnect to reconnect to our friends, family, co-workers and the world.
We would feel better connecting without a device, once it is done a few times,
and we have improved communication. Parents and children would talk again,
friends would call each other and co-workers would discuss things and come up
with great ideas, instead of texting and emailing.
Improving
by trying to not rely on the digital technology so much daily, is the improvement
for us. Going back to the days before the smartphones and tablets, and being
social.
