Storytelling

Reposted from April 30, 2017

Technology has changed the work of communicators and their storytelling, and as it evolves so will the training. Storytelling moved opera to vaudeville, radio news to radio theater, film to film in motion to film in sound, color, 3D, on VHS and on DVD, according to Sabia (2011). Sabia’s TED talk discusses the evolution of storytelling and how the internet and social media have impacted storytelling by providing a farther reach than ever before. Social media allows us to share with others our own stories through video, photo and text.
In 6,000 years of storytelling, it’s gone from depicting hunting on cave walls to depicting Shakespeare on Facebook walls, says Sabia. Because of the internet people can broadcast their stories via social media globally. The technology changes has influenced training for communicators to learn digital tools and technology. The audience for this type of storytelling is now a global audience, and reaching them in a shorter amount of time by digital tools and social media.

The story telling today uses Web 2.0 tools thanks to technology. Web 2.0 is the telling of stories using Web 2.0 tools, technologies and strategies, according to Alexander & Levine (2008, p.42). Web 2.0 allows for stories to be told in a new way with social media, images, hyperlinks, mobile devices and even gaming. According to Alexander & Levine, Web 2.0 tools are built to combine micro content from different users with a shared interest, a blog post, and a comment, from different people connected by the common use of a descriptive tag (p. 42).
The training needed for this change in storytelling influenced by technology is an understanding of digital tools, social media platforms that are used by audiences, who the audience is, and various devices used. Knowing how they all work as well to provide the best story across Web 2.0.
