“I would rather text than talk”
“I would rather text
than talk” Turkle (2012)
The
influence of the internet has been most significant in the way it has
transformed the lives of young people, according to Furedi (2015). They are
growing up today not knowing or wanting to have an actual face to face
conversation. They are growing up with the technology that we have become
comfortably glued to daily. They use emoji’s when communicating which are just
images representing a facial expression, animal, food, sport or location and
more. Turkle (2012) says that people say what's wrong with having a conversation
is that it takes place in real time and you can’t control what you're going to
say. Turkle continues that texting, email, posting, all of these things let us
present the self as we want it to be.
Turkle’s
TED talk continues to say that people get so used to being short-changed out of
real conversation. Because conversations are being short-changed, we turn to
social media to say what we are thinking or doing. No one feels they are being
listened to. Turkle suggests that this is why it’s so appealing to have a
Facebook page or Twitter feed, there are automatic listeners. I know that over
the last few years I’ve received more emails at work and bothered by phone
calls. I hate the thought of calling people, mainly because I don’t have back
up that I called to send as a reminder that hey I reached out to you. Others
email as well more often now and only call when they have emailed twice and do
not get an instant reply or reply at all. It seems to be bothering us more to
just call or talk to a person and have a conversation, and a lack of interest
if we do. I hope we can move past that in the next couple years, it is sad to
think kids grow up not really knowing how to handle a conversation.
